What is the Lymphatic System?

Our Lymphatic System is crucial for the optimal functioning of our immune responses. It removes all fluids that "get stuck" in our tissue during the oxygen and nutrient exchange between arteries and veins at a capillary level.

Lymphatic vessels are like little one-way drain pipes for the lost fluid (lymph). Muscle contractions push lymph into these vessels and ship it from lymph node to lymph node where it is filtered, cleansed, and monitored for pathogens. The lymph nodes produce cells and antibodies which protect our body from infection and disease.

Once the collecting and filtering has been completed by the nodes, they empty into two collecting ducts. These two ducts end at the large subclavian veins near our clavicles (collar bones), where the lymph pours back into the bloodstream.

What if it doesn't drain? This could happen if the vessels or nodes are blocked, removed or damaged or when our muscles are unable to contract to ‘push’ the lymph into these drains.

When it’s not functioning well the lymphatic system may have a role in obesity, Crohn’s disease and other disorders.

How can I improve my lymphatic system?

  • Deep Breathing
  • Physical Activity
  • Dry Brushing/Self Massage
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Lymph Drain & Sculpt Massage
